Applications for ASCC leadership positions during 2015-2016 school year will be available April 6.
ASCC president, vice president and club coordinator positions used to be decided by student vote, according to ASCC Executive Assistant Jonathan Judge.
“A lot of people were voting for their friends, turning it into a social club,” Judge said. “Lots of people felt like they couldn’t get the position because they didn’t have a wide range of friends.”
He said that because the ASCC included a majority of friend groups, people weren’t being as productive.
In the years where elections were held student turnout was low, Judge said. In a previous interview with the Independent, Director of Student Life Sarah Gruhler said that in the final four years elections were held, only 325 of Clark’s 16,000 students bothered to vote on average, which is about 2 percent.
According to Judge, the application process includes a 50 student petition, a written statement of why an applicant feels they deserve the position, a career center approved resume and a student signed application. Applicants then go through the interviewing process with student committee members and faculty advisors.
Each position is a one year position and every student must reapply for the position every year, even if they currently hold it.
The four Activities Programing Board positions are the APB Social Events Coordinator, Educational Events Coordinator, Cultural Events Coordinator and Family Events Coordinator.
The seven ASCC Executive Council positions for fall quarter are ASCC President, Vice President, Executive Assistant, Finance Director, Club Coordinator, Student Relations and Promotions Coordinator and Activities Director.
APB and ASCC are the student run government. The positions help create and coordinate events and manage clubs.
ASCC also oversees the Services and Activities Fee Budget, a $1.6 million budget consisting entirely of student fees that fund more than 30 student clubs, programs and activities.
Applications for all positions are available on Clark’s website under Student Life Forms and Documents.
