Movie Showing For Black History Month

The Activities Programming Board had a special showing of the film “Freedom Writers” in honor of Black History Month on Wednesday in Gaiser Student Center.

The film follows Erin Gruwell, an English teacher who inspires her class of at-risk students to apply themselves and look past their racial differences.

Victoria Fidkevich, APB’s awareness events coordinator who helped organize and introduce the event, said that it’s important for students to have a “safe, open and respectful” conversation about race and racial tensions.

Addressing the audience, Fidkevich said that students should be aware of microaggressions due to race. She spoke about the upcoming Random Acts of Kindness Week, which lasts Feb. 15-18.

Over 30 students attended and were treated to free pizza. They were given surveys to fill out on which they could share their thoughts about the event and give ideas for events they would like to see in the future.
