Softball Splits Season Opener

By Brody Voge in Sports

The Clark softball team opened its season Tuesday with a doubleheader against the Centralia College Trailblazers at home.

The Penguins lost the first game 9-2 but came back to win the second 5-4.

Mandy Hill, head coach of the Penguins, said, “It just was a lot of first-game jitters.”

The second game started out like the first. At the end of the third inning the score was the same as the first game, 4-1 Centralia.

However the Penguins came alive scoring four runs in the fifth inning.

Haley Hamilton, a freshman from Battle Ground High School, was huge for the Penguins. Hamilton went 6 for 8 and drove in one run on the day. Hamilton also stole second in the fifth inning of the second game and eventually scored, helping Clark take the lead.

Hill credited Hamilton with great play during both games. “She’s our rock, she’s our core.”

The Penguins’ next contest will be in Lacey, Wash. on March 7 where they will play in an inter-region tournament.
